Dresses, Dresses and More Dresses

As James and Lucy returned from yet another moving trip to Kabala, two USPS Priority boxes awaited them.

The two boxes were from Granny Pearl's Trunk ,

The follow is the words from the creator of the Facebook Community Page of Granny Pearl's Trunk,
Wanda Karen Thompson of Athens, GA:

This project is an effort to help the mission of Nazareth House Apostolate in their work in Sierra Leone. I want to spread the word about the amazing work they do while also providing dresses for the little girls in Sierra Leone. I named this project in memory of my precious grandmother, Pearl Phillips Thompson. She was a talented seamstress and a loving Christian woman. Granny Pearl never had much in life in terms of material things but she had a trunk and you never knew what you might find in there! I hope to fill it now with hundreds of dresses to send to the little children in Sierra Leone.

Roo anxiously gets ready to open the boxes

Lucy and Roo begin to sort through the boxes

Dresses and Medication and Tuna Fish were enclosed

This project was a team effort from several in Athens, Georgia.   Currently, James and the family are in the middle of moving to Kabala.   You'll see more on this story in detail on this blog once they are able to unpack and distribute the dresses and medicines.   For now, we wanted Wanda and those who put this together to see that their gifts of love have arrived all the way to Sierra Leone and will be given to needy little girls very soon.   Thank you all!

Nazareth House looks towards Kabala.

For years now, Nazareth House Apostolate has made Freetown the home of its West African Headquarters in Sierra Leone. Year after year, we struggle with the muchness and busy-ness of the city.
Although, we have been very productive in our humanitarian aid work in Freetown,
we find that our work in the Northern Province of Kabala is growing
and flourishing.

Not only do we have a fully functioning, accredited school serving the Community,
we also support a farm worked by Pa Foday that feeds the family and villagers.

You've not seen or heard much from Pa Foday lately,
and that's because he is quietly doing his work on the farm,
unnoticed but depended upon by many.
With the loss of our lease of our Operations Center in Freetown known as St. Laurence House, we are forced to find a new residence.
We've tried to prepare for this, year after year, but the money has never been raised to purchase a compound in Freetown. All the while, the real estate prices are increasing to levels that are beyond obtainable for us at Nazareth House.
Fr. Seraphim and I return in March, 2010 to make arrangements for housing our staff, supplies and operations of Nazareth House.

Every year at this time, Nazareth House is frantically collecting funds to pay the $10,000 annual rent for the small rental house we are using currently (lease expires March 2010).

This year we are in the same position, we need to raise money immediately, but this time it is to relocate and purchase our own property -- In Kabala.
Kabala, is an up and coming community,
yet maintains quiet, stillness and is family oriented. This is a good environment for our work.
The people of Kabala, including neighboring villages are very welcoming and friendly.

As you look through these pictures of the Farm in Kabala, and you see the people working together as one big family
- I believe you will agree, Kabala is where we need to be.
Last week, when James' suffered the horrific automobile accident, he was in Kabala to do just that - look for some available property.
This year, instead of raising $10,000 for annual rent (which continues to rise every year and leaves us with no stability or ownership); we are raising money to purchase land and build in Kabala, instead.

Nazareth House must continue, you can see on this blog, youtube and our website the documentation of the work being done. The lives changed.
There is no doubt where contributions go - you see the progress, you see the donations in action. This is your work, all of us together - The board members, staff and advisors of Nazareth House take no claim over the labor, it is all done in God's Name as he expresses Himself through you.

It is a global family working together.
For our trip to Sierra Leone this March 2010, we are escorting a pre-med student to help with some of the medical clinic work in Kroo Bay and in Kabala.

The airline tickets have been arranged and paid.

However, we would be wasting the opportunity if we didn't provide the same "on the ground" humanitarian aid we give every mission trip.
We must raise funds for needs as we work our way through the villages
from Freetown to Kabala. We cannot be in the country and not do the work we are called to do,
therefore we are setting a goal of $6,000 to perform these duties during this Lenten Mission in March.
We must also raise another $10,000 (minimum) for a down payment for a facility to set up our work in Kabala. We'll need to raise much more for completion of the compound, but far less than we would have had to pay in Freetown. We built the entire school for $55,000 in Kabala... we are expecting we can do as well with the compound.

This would provide housing for James, Kadijah, Lucy, Ann Marie and Roo as well. Remember, by the end of March, they will be in the streets. Our hands are tied without your financial assistance, there is nothing we can do.

Many people, especially James and his family, have put much effort and taken risk to perform and continue the work of Nazareth House.
Now is not the time to back off from what God has commanded of us
- "For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat;
I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in..." Matthew 25:35.

Please pour out of your bounty, the love expressed through your financial giving. As always, every donation to Nazareth House is tax deductible.
Tell your friends, family, co-workers - get the word out. Invite them to join in something real, something bigger than ourselves. --giving life to those in need. Don't keep it to yourself, this is an experience that should be shared.
Nazareth House is all about love, a place where you belong.

Dr. James Konteh, Sierra Leone (Part 2)

Dr. Konteh has been wishing for a digital camera so that he could document some of his surgeries. Especially those made in such limited and trying conditions that turned out to be successful & happy endings.

Recently James met up with Dr. Konteh while he was in Freetown and gave him a gift from Nazareth House Apostolate-A brand new digital camera complete with accessaries and a nice case :)

Nazareth House received this email from Dr. Konteh (re: the camera)

Dear Vicki,
I just receive the Kodak Camera from James. Thank you for a kind gesture. I really appreciate it and I salute you for a purpose. For your information I have just been posted to Kenema Government hospital with effect from the 1st of February 2009. I shall inform you when ever I report on duty. I have informed James about it.
Thank you.
Dr. Konteh.

Through the years, Nazareth House has caught up with Dr. Konteh and brought him the medical supplies he so desperately needs to do his work. It is our intention to keep in touch with him and help him out, even as he begins new work in Kenema.

There is one thing about Nazareth House, we build relationships with those we serve. Making Nazareth House like a huge family, our lives entwined. Yours in America and theirs in Sierra Leone -still one family. As we've said many times, we do not throw someone a bag of rice and go on. Never seeing them again, never thinking about them. We grow with them and they with us.

Here James supplies him with sutures and other medical equipment.

The above photo shows Dr. Konteh at the new medical facility in Kabala. It is new, clean and very nice...but remains without supplies or staffing. The brain drain is great in Sierra Leone. Once educated, prospective nurses and doctors leave the country seeking employment where they can sustain a living.

Nazareth House has specific sources for the hospital/medical supplies needed in Salone (Salone - Krio for Sierra Leone). Your financial donations enable us to provide the equipment for these hospitals.

There are times that we have over-the-counter medicine drives in which to minister to those who are sick in the areas we serve (Advil, tums, cold capsules, etc). At this time we are not collecting until we have succeeded in securing a residency in Freetown in which to store and distribute.

It is our hope that we can raise the amount of rent our Landlord of the current facility, St. Laurence House, is asking. He is asking $10,000 by March 1, 2009. We are thankful that he has allowed us to rent another year, he had first refused. Rental property is getting scarce in Freetown. Property available is being priced out of our reach due to the influx of foreigners able to spend freely. We are working hard to purchase our own land and property but must secure a place to keep our staff and all the supplies off the streets in the meantime.

We are accepting all donations, small or large to make this goal of $10,000 by March 1st. EVERYTHING pushes us towards obtaining this goal so don't hesitate, thinking a small amount won't make a difference... it will! Tell your co-workers, family and friends. Share the opportunity to really help the poor in one of the poorest nations in the world.

Tax deductible donations should be made to:
