Happy Faces

Deer Hunting Season in Kentucky brings joy not only to the hunters

but clear across the ocean to the West African Nation of Sierra Leone.

These little girls had never tasted the tasty snack...

the consistency and the flavor are strange to them

but ole' so good ... and filled with protein (something they rarely get).

Thank you to Denny and Joan

...and thank you to all the NHA supporters
who make possible the help
these children and their parents so desperately need.

Its time for Jerky in Sierra Leone

A few weeks ago Denny Markwell came to the Kellia and brought with him several boxes filled with deer jerky for Sierra Leone.  Denny and JoanE have been sending this jerky to Sierra Leone for several years now, it has become an annual event.

We packed the jerky in several boxes along with medications and supplies - eleven boxes all together.

Taped up and secured the boxes were shipped off to James in Freetown via USPS Flat Rate Priority (the cheapest way to ship).

Nine days later, five boxes arrived.  Yet another two days and James receives notice that the remaining six boxes had completed their journey to Freetown safely.

Little Miss Vicki helps open the boxes shipped from Taylorsville, KY
As the NHA Board Members were meeting on Saturday of last week, James was able to report that everything was intact.  The solar lights were not broken, everything came in just as it was shipped especially the jerky.

James has now begun to distribute the jerky to many people in Kabala, the villages and in Freetown who are eagerly waiting its arrival.

What a treat the jerky is....

Last week, one of the boxes that NHA sent to Sierra Leone arrived at its destination.  There were others that were mailed together with it, but sometimes things are released at different times depending on how the postal workers in Lungi process the shipment.   Once the packages arrive in Freetown, the Postal Workers there understand the value of the boxes and the needs of the people and they try their best to get them to James.   Last week when the single box arrived in Freetown, the postal worker (a friend to James) took the care to have it delivered to James in Kabala.

Box in hand, James set straight out to put the box's contents to use.  Squeezed in among the medications in the box was some deer jerky.  In villages with no electricity, no form of refrigeration, the jerky is a great source of protein.

Back to Sierra Leone, Back to work

James Mansaray's has returned to Sierra Leone from his visit to America.   Once back home, he spent a good bit of time reuniting with his family.  It was a sweet reunion.

Not wishing to waste time in tending to the people of Sierra Leone who depend on the work of Nazareth House to pull them through these times of extreme poverty; James and Kadijah have returned to the full swing of activity - spreading the aid provided by  our wonderful Nazareth House Team of supporters.
One Hut Village:  Photo taken in March 2010
The first matter of business, was to get to our beloved One Hut Village to make sure they were surviving well.

They are isolated and must depend on the bush to provide their existence.
They all rushed out to greet James and gave thanks for his safe return.

They checked him out to see if

America had treated their brother well...

Seeing that he had gained weight and looked good, it  pleased them.   America had indeed given him good treatment.

Kadijah immediately set about distributing much needed Worm pills.
This family, as are most families in Sierra Leone, is constantly plagued with internal parasites.

Our thanks to Dr. Baumann and Clark County Family Health Center for helping NHA to provide this much needed medication.

After administering the worm medication,

Kadijah supplied the family

 with over-the-counter medications from NHA.

Denny and Joanie Markwell of Laurenceburg, Kentucky are a part of Nazareth House Apostolate and St. Simeon Skete.  It happens that they are the deer processors for the area.

They made up a batch of deer jerky for NHA and James carried it over for the One Hut village. What better way to fill hungry bellies in Sierra Leone than to provide them with this protein?  The perfect meat for the family at One Hut, it needs no refrigeration, no cooking.  Its ready to eat.

James gives a piece of jerky for trial.
slowly chewed,
you can tell by the smiles
this treat is met with approval.

What a happy reunion, thanks to everyone!

The Nazareth House Team is simply the best in the world

What a picture of loving your neighbor.

God bless you all!!!!!!!!!!!
