St. Simeon Skete, Taylorsville Kentucky USA

With St. Simeon, the God receiver, as our patron, the skete seeks to practice the ideals found in our Rule, The Thousand Day Nazareth. In simplicity and poverty, the skete embraces the struggle of inner life through the practice of the Prayer Rope.

James recently wandered into this village.

Now that he lives in Kabala he is finding his way into more and more remote villages who have never received aid or help before.

The main breadwinner for the villagers has just passed away and the already struggling clan is finding themselves more and more in need.

One of the first things James does as he enters a village is to assess the health of the people.

Everyone looked relatively healthy, most had worms, but internal parasites are a normal problem in Sierra Leone.

As James scanned the community, his eyes rested on one little girl.  She was limping.

A closer looked revealed an infected burn.  An even closer look revealed loss of skin.

In many cases, the burn and the skin heal (scarred but healed) -  its the infection that does the damage.  We've lost a few children due to the infection of burns.

Because of recent shipments, James has access to a limited supply of antibiotics and can start this little girl on some.  Our supply is low, as is our triple-antibiotic wound ointment (neosporin).  We are working to replenish this supply.  This is just one of many difficulties requiring our attention - day after day, hour after hour.

We continue to press for a vehicle.  Had we had one, James could have brought this child to a clinic or the compound for treatment.  Alas, he is unable to carry her the great walking distance.

People are in need, as Advent approaches and we begin to think of "charity" or even year end "tax deductions" please consider the work of Nazareth House Apostolate.    Be a part of the family of NHA, working together in the areas of the poorest of the poor in Sierra Leone.

You can make your tax-deductible donation either by clicking on this link

or through the Paypal Donation Link on our website

or by mail
NHA; 185 Captains Cove Drive, Taylorsville, KY 40071

or via Guidestar

When James returns home to the compound, his day does not stop.  His door is knocked upon frequently.  He doesn't get much of a break but he's okay with that
knowing that he can help save a life, bit by bit.  Yet...
and yet...
He needs us to see him through.  We need to provide him with the means to do this work.

Thanks you.

West Coast, East Coast, North, South

...and everywhere in between...

A WEST COAST COUPLE  (we will simply call refer to them as WCC) has challenged everyone in ALL areas of the United States  and countries overseas, too ...

by matching every donation given between September 24 and October 24th, 2011 up to $5,000.

Here’s your chance to double your donation - you can give more with less coming out of your pocket.   Now is the time to give...

If there is someone out there that could put their compassion in action by donating  $5,000 in one contribution

that would end this campaign and the WCC  will match it immediately.    Chances are.... that won't happen...

We know there are those that could make that kind of donation and it wouldn’t affect their standard of living one bit

 - but maybe they haven’t come across blogs about the needs of those in Sierra Leone.

Maybe they haven’t seen the faces of the children as they hope for someone to change their lives.

For a lot of us, its a bit of sacrifice to give $100, $50 or even less.  But we do it anyway, for our brothers and sisters in need.

And there are those that giving any amount is not a sacrifice at all.   Regardless, most of us here in the USA  have better housing than what is the "norm" for those in Sierra Leone

Zinc nailed up to another structure makes a home, a shelter for many....

and you can get creative, but shelter is shelter, when you are without... you do what you can do.

People are hungry, there isn't Soup Kitchens for them to go...

people are sick and there is not much of a healthcare system to seek help, and very little medical help is free.

There are no “welfare” programs for these people and jobs (as much as they want them and are willing to work) are just not available.

Many times people have said, “I’m sorry - my little bit of a contribution won’t make a difference”.

Well, with this matching gift - your donation just doubled!  Not bad, huh?    Every amount is used to make a difference.

Now the WCC want to see every State in the Union represented in this “Matching Game” to benefit the people of Sierra Leone through Nazareth House Apostolate ...so let’s show what we can do.

Don’t worry about the amount, it will be matched.   Let’s get started and make a difference in many many lives.

We all want to "save for a rainy day" but in Sierra Leone they just want to exist in that rainy day.

As of this morning, we have received 2 donations from
S in Salem, OR
E in Madison, WI
Total Received $50 Goal $5,000

Let's have YOUR city, YOUR state represented in this campaign.

Let’s make the WCC pay ....   Give today!

Nazareth House Syntactic Tree

There is so much to be done and so many depending on us.  As we continue to pay down the construction costs  of the NHA Compound (balance due $6,000) in Kabala, we must also keep up with our other responsibilities.  We continue to pray for compassionate folks who will commit to monthly support of Nazareth House.  For as little as $25 per month you can make a huge difference in many lives and enable the work of NHA to continue and grow.   Please consider doing so today.

The first twenty people that sign up to be a NHA Monthly Sustainer -giving regular monthly donations to provide for the work of NHA, will receive this tote bag.

St. Simeon Skete (prayer) is the heart of Nazareth House Apostolate from which all that we do begins, circulates and is pumped out.

Nazareth House Kabala is our field house in which the mission work is accomplished.  Together the two exemplify the teamwork we have in our supporters and the beneficiaries - working together with great love,  to do the work of Nazareth House.

The teamwork of Nazareth House is amazing.

In fact it is more than amazing...

it is  TREEmendous

Last week as we ended the day at the Chapel at St. Simeon Skete with the service of Compline, we noticed the branches had formed together a syntactic structure in strings of leaves to spell out the letters:  N.  H.  for Nazareth House.

We had been considering cutting the tree down as it seemed to be dying.

As we got a closer look, we noticed that the letters were made up of new growth in the midst of the dying leaves and branches.

Part of the Rule of Nazareth House is that you must daily do manual labor, this is carried out at the Skete in Kentucky, USA

 and also in Sierra Leone.

The NHA School was in severe need of protective paint as is the buildings at St. Simeon Skete.  Even though we haven't paid the Compound Construction work off, we were able to squeeze a little money to paint the school

and we hope to raise the money for St. Simeon Skete very soon as the buildings are wood and must be sealed and protected before Winter sets in.  The wood is a past due a treatment and we don't want further deterioration to set in.

In the meantime, in Kabala, the school is being prepared for the new year...

"There is no substitute for hard work."- Thomas A. Edison

"For the people worked with all their heart."  Nehemiah 4:6

"We work to become, not to acquire." - Elbert Hubbard

"May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us-- yes, establish the work of our hands." - Psalm 90:17

"There is joy in work. There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something." - Henry Ford

"But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."

Our enrollment is growing and we have ran out of room at the NHA School.  This year we are adding room dividers in the old classrooms to generate additional classrooms.

"Work is love made visible. And if you cannot work with love but only with distaste, it is better that you should leave your work and sit at the gate of the temple and take alms of those who work with joy." - Khalil Gibran
